This month we are visiting Talamanca again with our outreach program.
AHPPA will go together with volunteers to neuter in this poor area where the real Indians live. Their animal is very important to them; they are their company in the fields. The problem that exists is the overpopulation. Most of the puppies that are borne are immediately killed. We want to prevent this cruel act with our neuter programs; this will have to be done continuously, so eventually we will be able to stop the killing of the puppies.

Yolanda Leiva is organizing the Pacayas Project, a sterilization program for the pets in this Turrialba community. Yolanda owns a farm in Pacayas and has requested the church’s community services assembly room for the campaign, she had several people booked for SATURDAY April 5. Pacayas is in the southern slope of the Irazú volcano. There are several lovely very colorful towns, beautiful farming patches for all types of vegetables.

AHPPA had a visitor this week from the RSPCA, Coralie Farrel. Coralie was invited to Costa Rica to attend a seminar on “disaster management” with several other animal lovers from around the world. They will learn how help the animals in emergency situations. Disasters are becoming more frequent and more serious in recent years, they include anything from foot and mouth disease, avian flu, floods, tsunamis, fires etc etc.

AHPPA is affiliated with the RSPCA of Great Britain. They helped us with the construction of our Environmental and Animal Welfare School which is in full swing during the school year.

Another dedicated group in Costa Rica called “Helping Hands” raises funds for various charitable organizations and they held a garage sale in February which raised 250,000 colones ($500) for the Refugio! We are most grateful for their help and are constantly amazed at their ability to help so many people and animals here in Costa Rica regularly.

Dear friends from Costa Rica and the world

All funds will be used for our Outreach Program – which is now in effect full time. With the hiring of a 3rd veterinarian we are able to sterilize, vaccinate and treat animals in the more rural and poverty stricken areas of Costa Rica, for people who couldn’t afford it for their furry companions. This has been a long time goal of AHPPA and we are thrilled to report that it is extremely successful.
